Bolt pulls past Powell to win windy 100m (AP) - Usain Bolt battled the cold and a headwind, and was forced to come from behind to beat Asafa Powell in 9.77 seconds Friday in a season farewell 100 meters at the Van Damme Memorial. Running into 1.3 meter-per-second headwind, the Olympic champion had a bad start and immediately saw Powell shoot ahead of him.
LPGA backs off English-only requirement (AP) -

The LPGA Tour has backed off plans that would have suspended players who could not efficiently speak English. The policy was widely criticized as discriminating against players, with most of the attention on Asians. LPGA Tour commissioner Carolyn Bivens said Friday Sept. 5, 2008 the tour would announce a revised plan by the end of the year.

Under increasing criticism, the LPGA Tour on Friday backed off plans to suspend players who cannot speak English well enough to be understood at pro-ams, in interviews or in making acceptance speeches at tournaments. ChiSox slugger Quentin has broken wrist (AP) - American League home run leader Carlos Quentin has a broken wrist, and the Chicago White Sox left fielder will have surgery Monday that could sideline him for the rest of the season. Quentin was removed from the lineup before Tuesday's game because of what the White Sox described then as a sore right forearm, and he hasn't played since.
Seahawks WR Branch to miss opener (AP) - The return of Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Deion Branch is going to wait at least a week. Coach Mike Holmgren says Branch will not play Sunday when the Seahawks open their season at Buffalo. Branch was trying to get back in time for the season opener just seven months after having major reconstructive surgery on his left knee.
Rangers All-Star Kinsler out for season (AP) - Texas Rangers All-Star second baseman Ian Kinsler will have season-ending surgery to repair a sports hernia. Kinsler last played Aug. 17, and an MRI the following day revealed the injury. Kinsler was hopeful of avoiding surgery and possibly playing again this season, but he remains sore and the Rangers said Friday he will have surgery next week.
